A Very English Modernism
John Penn designed house in Suffolk, UK featuring furniture by Alvar Aalto, Charles Eames, Robin Day, Ernest Race and Dieter Rams. John Penn (11 March, 1921 – 14 February 2007) was a British architect. He was born in Northamptonshire, and died in Suffolk. He spent some time in the United States with Richard Neutra and his buildings were influenced by the Case Study Houses. His work includes a factory, and a pavilion for Trinity College, Cambridge, and several private houses in Suffolk.
This house is now the home of fashion designer Margaret Howell who also sells some very cool home products from classic UK designers like Robert Welch as well as vintage products from Poole, and Midwinter, in her UK shops. Additionally she has been responsible for the new found popularity of the reissued late 1950s designed Ercol chairs and Ernest Race's Festival of Britain chair. Her latest collaboration is with Ernest Race to reissue his Heron chair (which can be seen in the 3rd picture above) and footstool from the post-war period, Howell says of it "It reminds me of the Eames lounge chair, but whereas Eames used rather opulent and luxurious moulded rosewood and leather, Race used functional materials - it is utilitarian yet elegant."
