Beam us up Hadid

What a very Sciene Fiction tableau is presented to us in Zaha Hadid's design for the Abu Dhabi Performing Arts Centre: a new cultural institution for the Guggenheim Foundation and Tourism Development Company of Abu Dhabi (the capital of United Arab Emirates - now home to a growing number of my family). Hadid’s future pod will house a music hall, concert hall, opera house, drama theatre and a flexible theatre with a combined seating capacity for 6,300. The Centre is also likely to house an Academy of Performing Arts. It will be one of five major cultural institutions on the new 270-hectacre cultural district of Saadiyat Island . Jean Nouvel Studios and Tadao Ando will also be building projects there and Lincoln Centre are said to be considering opening an offshoot there. This and quite a few other developments in Abu Dhabi and Dubai really do present a zone that truly is "the future" architecturally at least. I still have many unanswered questions about U.A.E after my one visit the Xmas before last but things like this do make it seem all the more appealing. The idea of a massive island devoted to the arts is quite an incredible prospect. Contrast this project with the much smaller scale project for the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum Hadid is building at Michigan State University in East Lansing below >
